Startline eSign Platform - Frequently Asked Questions (including how we use your personal data)

The information provided on this page relates to Startline eSign Platform provided in conjunction with our partner, OneSpan Sign. This platform has been in use from 13th May 2024.

Q. What is Startline eSign?

A. Startline eSign offers a paperless and electronic process that allows you to sign your Agreement online. The solution offers a streamlined agreement completion process which utilises biometrics checks to prevent errors or delays and with improved fraud prevention. All Agreement information (including important Pre-Contract Information) is presented onscreen for ease of reading and acknowledgement. The method of signing does not alter the terms of the Agreement in any way.


Q. Why do you offer online signing?

A. We provide the facility for you to sign your Agreement electronically as an alternative to the historical paper-based methods as it is more efficient, convenient and practical.


Q. Is it secure?

A. Yes. Signing your Agreement takes place over a secure connection. Once the document has been signed by both parties, it is protected using a tamper-seal which ensures that it cannot be altered.


Q. Is it legal?

A. Yes. This process has been approved by the leading e-signature specialist law firms in the UK and as such, is legally enforceable in a court of law. Furthermore, this process conforms to the 1974 Consumer Credit Act and EU e-signature legislation.


Q. How does it work?

A. We have prepared a PDF (scanned image) of your Agreement and supporting documents with the details provided during the finance application process. Using Startline eSign (supported by our provider OneSpan) you need only do the following to sign your Agreement.

  • Using the link provided by your motor dealer or online broker, validate your email address via a One Time Passcode (OTP) and confirm your contact telephone number.
  • Complete the Identification & Verification process by undertaking the biometrics check. This involves using of your mobile or tablet device to photograph your Driving Licence (preferred) or Passport, followed by taking a picture of your face. The system will then carryout its checks on the submitted photographs and the information contained in your submitted ID document.
  • Check that all the details provided on the contract documentation are correct and confirm that you are happy with all the terms of the Agreement.
  • Click on the signature blocks and your name and a date stamp will appear on your Agreement and Direct Debit mandate.Click to confirm. At this point your Agreement is signed and will be passed to Startline for further processing.

Q. What do I need to have with me to finalise the Agreement?

A. You will need the following:

  • A mobile or tablet device with a camera
  • Your driving licence or a passport
  • Access to an email address
  • Any additional information specifically requested during the finance application process.

Please note, the email address used in the eSign journey will be the address where your executed documents will be sent at the end of the application process. We do not recommend using a shared email address.


Q. I do not hold a UK (GB), UK (NI) or EU driving licence, what are my options?

A. Unfortunately you cannot use Startline eSign without a UK (GB), UK (NI) or EU driving licence. Please speak to the sales representative at your motor dealer or online broker to revert to signing a paper version of your Agreement where applicable.


Q. Can I review or download a copy of my documents after I have signed?

A. Yes. Once you complete the signing process, you can review and/or download copies of all the documents you reviewed and signed, including the Pre-Contract Information.

After your agreement has been executed by Startline, a copy of the contract will be sent to the email address that you verified at the beginning of the signing process.


Q. When is my Agreement executed?

A. After you have completed the electronic signatures and provided any required supporting documentation, the Agreement will be processed and countersigned by Startline. At this point the Agreement is executed.

We will email you a copy of all Agreement documentation once executed by Startline. This will be emailed to the address that you verified at the beginning of the signing process.

Q. If I am unsure about signing electronically, what other options are available to me?

A. For customer convenience and to maximise fraud prevention, Startline’s preference is for all customers to complete their signing using the eSign platform. However, if you are unable to complete this journey, you can speak to the sales representative at your motor dealer or online broker to revert to signing a paper version of your Agreement where applicable.


Q. Can I change my mind after signing?

A. Your Agreement gives you details of your rights. Please refer to the section "Withdrawal". Please note that whilst you may be able to withdraw from the Agreement, any arrangement to withdraw from the purchase of the vehicle will be between you and the vehicle supplier.


Q. Who are OneSpan?

A. OneSpan are a partner and system provider who specialise in global eSignature solutions.


Q. How will Startline and OneSpan process my personal data?

A. In order to carry out the eSign process Startline and OneSpan will collect and process your personal data in accordance with their policies. OneSpan will collect your biometric personal data and identification data during the ID and verification process. This consists of your ID documents and photos or images of yourself. OneSpan will then share the personal data collected by them with Startline in order for Startline to verify your identity and keep a record of your identity for the purposes of entering into the Agreement and as detailed in Startline's Fair Processing Notice.

Q. Do Startline and OneSpan use Cookies on the eSign website?

A. Yes. As the site is maintained and provided by OneSpan, it is OneSpan cookies that are included in the process. Two different sets of cookies are used throughout the eSign process and the policy for each can be found as follows
